Run in partnership with the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, this non-credit workshop series kicked off in early November with more than 40 registered students.

The seminar is taught by Brian Axelrad, ’09, chief investment officer at Beyond Capital Fund (an impact investment fund focused on India and East Africa) and a corporate attorney and chair of the venture capital and technology practice at Horwood Marcus & Berk in Chicago.

Brian Axelrad explains, “There have been a number of efforts around metrics related to social impact and unlike financial metrics where you have GAAP or IFRS that can be broadly applied across businesses and industries, not all metrics will be applicable to all social enterprises. Certainly GIIRS (Global Impact Investing Ratings System) and IRIS (Impact Reporting and Investment Standards) are good for a larger assortment of metric choices to apply to businesses and funds, respectively. But it's up to specific investors and businesses to consider them carefully and understand which apply to their particular context. But if there is one success metric to rule them all, I don't see it.”

Brian Axelrad selected as Chicagoan Making an Impact for July 2012 by Panzanzee, a Chicago-based social enterprise incubator and co-working space.

1) How do you have impact in your work?  It depends on what hat I’m wearing at the time.  As far as traditional “impact” in the social enterprise field, I am Chief Investment Officer of Beyond Capital Fund, which is a social impact investment fund that invests in businesses in India and East Africa focused on the water, waste, sanitation and health care sectors.  In addition to achieving market rate financial rates and proving that financial sustainability is a viable market strategy for social impact, our goal is to improve the quality of life and standards of living for those living at the bottom of the pyramid.  As a lawyer, about half of my practice is working with and representing entrepreneurs and business owners of all stripes, social/impact or (mostly) otherwise.
